HTC Officially Unlocks Six More Devices

HTC has added the HTC Desire Z, ChaCha, Aria, DROID Incredible, Status, and T-Mobile G2 to their growing list of officially unlocked devices. Some of these devices have already been unlocked by the Android community, but this is an official and safer way to unlock your bootloader.

The HTC Dev program requires five-steps to unlock your device. HTC strongly suggests that you do not unlock the bootloader unless you are confident you understand the risks involved. Unlocking your device could cause damage to your phone that is not covered under the warranty.

If you are nervous about unlocking your device HTC has come up with a safe solution. The HTC Dev program allows you to officially unlock your bootloader without using community-developed tools. On Wednesday, HTC added T-Mobile's myTouch 4G Slide and the EVO View 4G to their long list of unlockable devices.

Unlocking your device may void your warranty, and HTC warns that you should not unlock the bootloader "unless you are confident that you understand the risks involved." Sounds like Android smartphone maker HTC will join Motorola in offering unlocked bootloaders on its future Android devices. The change is a welcome one in the Android developer community, as it allows hardware owners to modify their devices. Many users complained to HTC about their practice of locking and encrypting bootloaders.

Amid the chorus of comments HTC offered to review its new policy, and made an official announcement regarding the policy review only a day later. HTC plans to stop the practice of locking bootloaders to allow users to install custom ROMs and perform other customizations.

Motorola to Unlock More Android Devices for Modification

Motorola seeks to counter its bad reputation among developers in the Android modification community by offering unlockable bootloaders in software updates later this year. The company currently provides an unlockable/relockable bootloader on the Xoom tablet, however other recent products including the Motorola Atrix 4G do not have the feature.
