Pre-Order the Sony Xperia 9.4-Inch Tablet

B&H is currently accepting pre-orders for the newly announced Sony Xperia 9.4-inch tablet. As rumored the new slate features a Tegra 3 chip and up to 64GB of built-in storage. It's equipped with a high-definition 9.4-inch TFT color LCD display that supports a cinematic 1280 x 800 native resolution, 1GB of RAM, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, 1MP front camera, 8MP rear camera, up to 32GB of expandable storage and Sony's IR Remote Control feature.

The tablet comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models, and ships with Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, but Sony promises a Jelly Bean upgrade is right around the corner. It also ships with several specialized apps such as Watch Now, Guest Mode and a Google Play redemption code for three free movies.

The U.S. bound Sony Xperia ion will hit AT&T on June 24th for $99. Sony originally announced the handset at CES 2012.

Sony's first 4G LTE smartphone will ship with Gingerbread 2.3.7, but an Android 4.0 upgrade is expected after its release. The Xperia ion features a 4.6-inch HD Reality display (1280 x 720), a 12-megapixel Fast Capture camera with quick launch feature, and 16GB of internal memory (microSD slot for up to 32GB of expansion included). The 1.5Ghz dual core powered device is PlayStation Certified for high quality mobile gaming, and is capable of shooting 1080p HD video.

A Closer Look at the Sony Xperia tipo dual Smartphone

Sony released a "close up" video for the new Xperia tipo dual smartphone. The tipo dual features a 3.2-inch 480 x 320 TFT display, and it is powered by an 800MHz Snapdragon processor. It will ship with Android 4.0 Ice cream Sandwich, a 3.2-megapixel camera and 2.5GB of user-accessible memory.

The theme of the video seems to be "easy": Easy sharing via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, an easy set-up guide and easy one-touch SIM switching. The advert also promises longer battery life, and plenty of room for content. Check out the Xperi tipo dual close up video from Sony below.

Sony Xperia Mini Pro Gets Android 4.0 Upgrade

UPDATE: Android 4.0.4 is rolling out for all Sony Xperia Mini Pro handsets. If you have not received a notification go to settings to look for the update.

Sony has promised that their entire 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio will receive Android 4.0 when possible. On Thursday, Sony kept part of their promise by offering an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for unlocked Sony Xperia Mini Pro handsets. Carrier-specific versions of the Xperia Mini will see updates as the individual carriers see fit to release them.

If you own an unlocked, unbranded Xperia Mini Pro you'll need to connect your device to Sony's PC Companion or Bridge for Mac application to upgrade. Since the upgrade is being released in batches you will also need to check here for a list of SI numbers.

Sony Announces Two More Xperia Toughphones

Sony is adding two more toughphones to its Xperia lineup. The Xperia Go and Xperia Acro S will be joining the Xperia family in Q3 of 2012. Both phones feature "scratch resistant mineral glass display with wet finger tracking," and are dust and water resistant.

The Xperia Go features a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 display and a dual-core 1GHz processor. The phone will ship with Gingerbread, but Sony promises an Android 4.0 update will follow. The Go also includes a 5-megapixel camera, and will be available in white, black and yellow.

Sony Xperia S: The First Sony Smartphone Makes Its Global Debut

Sony has announced its "first smartphone" is shipping globally, and retailers should be offering it soon. Unfortunately Sony is not releasing the Xperia S, Xperia P or the Xperia U in the U.S.. AT&T will be getting the Xperia Ion later this year though.

The Xperia S ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread but is expected to receive an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade in a few weeks. The smartphone features a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor, 12MP camera, and 720p display.

Sony Reader PRS-T1 Runs Android Apps After Hack

Another e-Ink Android reader has been modified to run Android apps and allow more access to the operating system. Much like how the Nook Touch was rooted now the Sony Reader PRS-T1 has been hacked. Although the project is a work in progress, the developer has already been successful at running several Android apps on the six-inch tablet.

The Digital Reader reports that several e-reader apps, AWD.Launcher, Android Terminal, CoolReader, FBReader, and ReLaunch among others are already running on the Sony T1. Although the Nook was famously shown playing Angry Birds on its e-Ink screen, so far the Sony T1 has not been able to run the game.

The heyday of the Walkman Personal Stereo may have died with the cassette tape, however Sony continues to market the brand. Current Walkman devices are, of course, digital music players but with Apple's iPod dominating the segment you don't hear much about the Walkman these days.

Pictured above by CNET at IFA 2011, this Android Walkman prototype plays music and runs apps from the Android Market. Lacking phone functionality, this new Walkman is clearly Sony's answer to the iPod touch.

Sony Confirms Android Honeycomb 3.0 Tablet Coming by Summer's End

Sony has confirmed earlier rumors that the company had a tablet in the works that would run Android 3.0 Honeycomb. In a report by the Nikkei, reported by Bloomberg, Sony CEO Howard Stringer revealed that Sony has in fact been working on such a tablet and that it would come to market sometime before the end of the summer. Stringer also indicated that the tablet would be sold first in the US market.

Rumors suggest the tablet may come in a unique factor, as seen above in a mockup produced by Engadget. The tablet would offer a "wrap" design, with the wrap assisting in holding the tablet by balancing the weight of the tablet in all the right places. The wrap would also double to assist in positioning of the tablet for typing.

Sony Developing PlayStation Certified Android Tablet

Tablets are all the rage and Sony has yet to enter the segment. All this might change with the S1, a prototype currently under development at the company that runs Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Sony is reportedly developing their own version of the Honeycomb interface, and according to Engadget sources the device is due for release in September.

These same sources claim the tablet will be PlayStation Certified, meaning the hardware will be gaming ready. With a 9.4-inch screen and a $599 price point, Sony is poised to deliver their first tablet in style.
