How do I update my ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet firmware?
To install an updated version of Android OS on your Archos 5 you only need the latest version of the firmware file. This will include all of the operating system improvements to date. The easiest way to update your tablet is to connect to a Wi-Fi network with your Archos 5.
If Wi-Fi is available, after connecting follow these steps:
1. Select the following options: Menu -> Settings -> About Device -> Firmware Update
2. Follow the instruction prompts to complete your Android firmware update.
If a Wi-Fi connection is not available:
1. Make sure the latest version of Windows Media Player 11 is installed on your computer.
2. On your computer navigate to the Archos firmware update page and select "Archos 5 Internet Tablet" from the drop down menu under Firmware.
3. Under the heading "Step 1: Download and Install" right click the link that says Download Archos Internet Tablet OS and save the file to your computer. If the browser warns you that the file could be harmful disregard the message.
4. On your tablet select Menu -> Settings -> Device Storage & USB connection -> USB connection mode
5. Verify that the USB connection mode is set to Mobile Media Device (MTP).
6. Connect the tablet to your computer with the USB cable and select "Mount" on your tablet.
7. After the computer detects the Archos 5 it will appear as a Mobile Device in the Windows Explorer. Double-click on the device to open its Internal Hard Drive icon.
8. Copy and paste the downloaded firmware (.AOS file) from your computer to the Archos 5. DO NOT copy the firmware into any folders on the tablet (Video, Music, etc.)
9. When copying is complete disconnect the tablet from the USB cable.
10. The Archos 5 will ask if you want to install the update file, so follow the instruction prompts to complete the update.
NOTE: If the firmware file (.AOS file) accidentally was copied into a folder, open the File manager application on the tablet to find the file. You can directly open the update file as soon as it's located.
11. After installation the Archos 5 will ask if you want to optimize your configuration by resetting. ARCHOS recommends that you reset when installing from firmware older than 1.6 to optimize your tablet's performance.
NOTE: Choosing "Reset Now" may remove applications installed from AppsLib. These will have to be reinstalled. Your media content and files will not be affected.
