Despite the many things that the Verizon enjoys pointing out that the Motorola "Droid Does", evidently one of the things it doesn't do is get the Android 2.1 update, at least not yet. It had been fairly heavily rumored that Verizon was planning an OTA update to Android 2.1 for all Motorola Droid owners yesterday, January 22nd. Unfortunately for many hopefully Droid owners, yesterday has come and gone, and without an Android update.

Hackers have already booted Android 2.1 on the Motorola Droid, setting aside the few lingering doubts regarding whether the Droid would have issues running the new Android OS.
Regardless of the fact that Android 2.1 brings little in the way of feature additions (namely Google Weather and Google News), countless Verizon Droid owners are eager to get their phones updated to 2.1 because of the significant speed increase hackers have reported once 2.1 is running on the Motorola Droid. The video shown below shows one Droid hacker exclaiming his disbelief at just how fast the phone is once Android 2.1 is on board.
Verizon and Motorola have offered no confirmation regarding whether or not the Droid is slated to receive the Android 2.1 OS, despite the widely reported leak that the update was coming, and soon, to the Droid. Speculation as to why Motorola/Verizon Droid owners are still waiting for the Android 2.1 update include the rumor that the update is being withheld under pressure from Google due to poor sales of the Nexus One.
For now, Droid owners will have to continue waiting and wanting.
