Coder and Android hacker Cyanogen has released a mod that enables multi-touch gestures in the Nexus One web browser. Since Google has pushed Android 2.1 source code to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) the floodgates have opened to ROM developers who are interested in adding features to Android devices.

The latest version of Android is dubbed Eclair and ships on the Google Nexus One. Changes from the previous Android build include:

- Support for Live Wallpaper
- New applications that were not included in Donut (Android 1.6)
- An updated Launcher and Gallery
- Additional minor bug fixes and new features

Cyanogen is working on a custom ROM and plans to add multi-touch support to more applications besides just the web browser. In the meantime he has released the stand alone browser multi-touch on the XDA-Developers forum.

Reports have indicated that Google deliberately did not enable multi-touch on the Nexus One to avoid a potential legal battle with Apple over gesturing patents. Sources claim Google was specifically asked to nix multi-touch on Android devices including the G1.

The T-Mobile G1 manufactured by HTC has also been heavily modified and Cyanogen maintains one of the best custom Android ROMs for the device.
